Ball & Doggett re-imagines ‘design icon’

The Bright White Album

Inspired by one of the most recognisable album covers of all time – The White Album by The Beatles – Ball & Doggett has developed The Bright White Album: a limited-edition self-adhesive swatch portfolio that explores the possibilities of a single label finish across four different constructions.

Drawing on the stark minimalism of The White Album, the project brings together the Bright White Felt family in a format that the company says ‘celebrates design, print and materiality, while reimagining the traditional specification process’. Produced in a limited run of just 150 editions, each album is housed in a numbered, hand-assembled rigid presentation box wrapped in Bright White Felt – Ever Opaque XL. Inside, recipients will find printed photography, kiss-cut material samples, technical specification cards and an adhesive and liner guide, presented in a format inspired by a vinyl record release.

The project was conceived and creatively directed by Josh Gleeson, Marketing Executive at Ball & Doggett, who explains: “From the outset, our intent was to create something people would want to keep rather than simply file away. The White Album became iconic because simplicity was its signature. We wanted to explore whether a single label finish could do the same.”

The Bright White Album showcases Bright White Felt, Bright White Felt Ever Opaque XL, Bright White Felt 100% Recycled and Bright White Felt Neck Label. Each construction offers distinct characteristics for different applications, from sustainability-focused projects and specialist neck-label applications to high-opacity and ice-bucket performance requirements, while retaining the recognisable felt surface that unites the range. Folded information cards provide technical specifications to support informed material selection.

For more than a decade, Ball & Doggett has exclusively supplied Bright White Felt in Australia. The range has become a popular choice for premium wine, spirits and craft beverage labels, where tactile qualities and material choice play an important role in shaping brand identity and shelf presence.

This project brought together several Australian print and packaging specialists. Pandora’s Boxes manufactured the rigid presentation boxes, albums and record sleeves, while Bambra printed the cards and paper inserts. Ball & Doggett produced the kiss-cut label sample sheets in-house. A range of premium substrates and finishing techniques were used throughout the project.

Bright White Felt – Ever Opaque XL features on both the album and rigid box covering, complemented by black foil and debossing on the presentation box and embossing on the album cover. The record sleeves feature Black Vellum, while the specification cards are printed on Mohawk Superfine Eggshell -Tone White. All albums, sleeves and presentation boxes were assembled by hand. The result brings together material selection, print and finishing in a single, considered piece, demonstrating how substrate choice and production techniques can work together to create a distinctive physical experience.

Gleeson adds: “The White Album was the ninth studio album and only double album produced by The Beatles, and it features a white cover which contains no graphics or text other than the band’s name embossed. It became iconic because of its simplicity and has become widely recognised as one of the most influential pieces of album and packaging design ever created. We wanted to produce our own collector’s piece as a tip of the hat to The White Album, which is why we also chose to produce a limited run of just 150 individually numbered pressings of this ‘album’, urging customers to enter a ballot to receive them.”
