Blazek shines in Neon Exhibition at Queensland’s SLQ

The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) is hosting the Neon Exhibition, an exploration of neon signage and its cultural and historical impact across Queensland. Running throughout the summer, the exhibition features 26 original neon signs, including Brisbane’s Stefan’s Rainbow, alongside archival photographs and film footage from SLQ’s collection.

Tracing neon’s development from the 1940s to the present, the exhibition examines its role as both a functional and artistic medium. It highlights the craftsmanship behind neon sign creation, showcasing the work of artists who transformed glass bending into a distinct and influential art form.

Industry legend Michael Blazek, a former president of the Australian Sign & Graphics Association (ASGA) and a lifetime Hall of Fame member, has played a key role in curating the exhibition. His selection of works reflects his extensive experience in the neon industry and underscores the importance of preserving these artifacts. Blazek has advocated for the establishment of a permanent collection space to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of neon works.

Blazek’s contributions are complemented by other collectors, creating a comprehensive display of neon’s artistic and cultural legacy in Queensland.

Exhibition highlights include:

  • Stefan’s rainbow and Jo-Jo's cafe neon signs (including original sketches for the signs)

  • Kookaburra Cafe neon signs (logo and text)

  • A replica Mr Fourex sign, made from materials gathered from the old Regatta Hotel

  • The Playroom sign (legendary Gold Coast venue)

  • Rare footage and photographs of neon’s history

  • Original sketches and designs for some of Queensland’s visual icons

The Neon Exhibition is open at the The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) and runs until Feb 9 2025.
