Label Concepts to install huge indigenous art canvas on Melbourne’s first high-capacity train

Local livery supplier Label Concepts will manufacture and install a 160-metre long canvas of Indigenous artists’ work on Melbourne’s first new high-capacity Metro train, as part of an $18,000 Victorian government commission.

The canvas will feature the work of Indigenous artists. Shortlisted are: Kirrae Whurrong woman Fiona Clarke, Boon Wurrung man Adam Magennis, Wurundjeri woman Mandy Nicholson and the Ballarat-based Pitcha Makin Fellas – a group of three Koori men representing different language groups.

An evaluation panel including two Traditional Owner representatives is now considering the designs, and the winning design will feature on the first seven-carriage train put into service.

The winning artist will work with the Department of Transport on a full-scale version of their design, which Braeside-based Label Concepts will then manufacture and install on the first new train.

The new trains will be able to carry 20 per cent more passengers and provide Victorians with a smoother, quieter, and more comfortable ride when they start running on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines following a thorough testing process.
