Vivad’s founder, Ewen Donaldson acknowleges that it can be confusing for people in the signage industry to comprehend the building regulations that relate to the application of a banner or a light box to a side of a building. “In recent years there has been a lot of commotion caused by flammable aluminium cladding. This has resulted in a number of changes to the regulations. These changes have affected where and how you can fix a banner, sign or light box to a building,” he says. “In August this year the ABCB released an advisory note which talks specifically about signage and what you need to do, in order to meet the National Construction Code NCC.” In order to comply to the code (certified by the Commonwealth of Australia and States and Territories 2020, published by the Australian Building Codes Board), Ewen explains that the sign must comply with all four of the following points: • achieves a group number of 1 or 2; • does not extend beyond one storey; • does not extend beyond a single fire compartment; and • is separated from other combustible signs by at least two storeys in the vertical direction. “The good news on the first point is that with recent testing of Vivad's long term frontlit and backlit banner vinyl, we have learned that without any modification, these products already successfully achieve a Group 1 classification.
