Why solar control window films?

Installing architectural window films can play a major role in achieving a high-performance building envelope, delivering an effective and economical solution to controlling energy costs and improving occupant comfort. Easily applied to the interior or exterior of glass or polycarbonate substrates, solar control window films cut heat build-up, even out hot-spots, reduce sun damage and provide more comfortable interior conditions.  As well as contributing to higher energy ratings, window films can upgrade the external appearance of your building, promoting visual uniformity and daytime privacy.

Window films for energy efficiency

Soaring energy costs, environmental legislation, and social consciousness are driving changes in commercial and residential buildings. Switching to CFL lighting, improving insulation, and upgrading air-conditioning to more efficient units are all sensible choices.  Still, one-third of energy costs typically come from cooling, and 80% of heat buildup comes from solar radiation through the glazing.

By controlling solar heat gain through windows, and reducing the cooling load, solar control window films can effectively help reduce energy usage.  By filtering sunlight, rejecting heat, glare, and harmful UV radiation, window films neutralize hotspots and keep interior temperatures more stable. This means that the cooling system works less, peak demand is lowered, and the air-conditioning operates more efficiently — and inexpensively. Direct savings result from lower energy bills, and  indirect savings by prolonging the service life of HVAC equipment and reducing the capacity required

Protecting building interiors and occupants

Large expanses of glass create interiors with lots of natural light, but direct UV radiation and heat exposure can significantly shorten the life of furniture, works of art, curtains and carpets, and also pose a health risk to building occupants.   Solar control window films block up to 99% of UV rays and reduce ambient heat, without markedly changing the levels of daylight.  By doing so, they can help limit fading, while protecting occupants’ skin and eyes from the damaging effects of the sun.

Enhancing tenant comfort and productivity

Annoying glare can be solved easily with window films. Whether the challenge is reflected light on computer screens or harsh, dazzling glare that ruins the ambience, solar control window films present an ideal solution, softening sunlight, minimizing eye strain, and retaining natural light and views.  Avery Dennison offers a range of highly energy-efficient Dual Reflective films, which cut glare by up to 93% but maintain a neutral, less reflective interior to preserve the view outside.

With less heat penetrating through windows, there are fewer hotspots and more even room temperatures.  This frees up window-side space for full functionality, especially important in commercial, retail and educational settings.

Custom design window graphics

Customisation and personalisation continue to emerge as a key trend throughout the graphics industry, particularly in interior architecture and design. The latest additions to the Design portfolio is the DS Print SR i which utilises UV cured and Latex print technology with optimal ink adhesion, including white inks, to create a range of customised full-colour designs, patterns, images and text for privacy and decoration. Do away with time-consuming cutting and weeding as this architecture grade product is virtually invisible where unprinted. Combining the latest in print receptive scratch-resistant topcoats, and advanced removable adhesives suitable for any transparent substrate, it’s the most innovative optically clear product for interior window graphics.

Improving appearances

An energy-efficiency upgrade with solar control window films not only improves the performance inside the building, but it can also dramatically enhance its exterior.  Whether you need to renovate the appearance of demetallized panes, hide unsightly blinds and curtains, or update the look of the 1970s gold glass, window film can transform the façade at a fraction of the cost of replacing the glazing system.  However, if your goal is to preserve the appearance and architectural integrity of a building, specialist films such as Avery Dennison SP e-Lite Spectrally Selective energy-efficient films go virtually unnoticed on the glass yet provide significant levels of solar protection and energy savings.

Upgrading Safety

Safety window film offers an answer to protection from shattered glass by adhering dangerous shards to the film, holding the glass in place during breakage.  Whether the threat is an impact, vandalism, break-in or natural disaster, security films of different thicknesses can provide the right protection.

An ideal solution is an anti-fragmentation window film with solar properties, such as Avery Dennison NT PerLite Ceramic 35 6 mil, an energy-saving solar control films that help protect from the dangers of shattered glass in a single product and installation.
